Will switching PI broker affect my cover?

Reviewed by Apex Insurance Brokers (FCA FRN 724952) · Published 15 July 2026

A common anxiety when considering a broker switch: does the change disrupt cover? Handled properly, no. Handled badly, yes — sometimes materially. Here's how to make sure it goes right.

What actually happens at broker switch

Your PI is placed with an insurer — not with the broker.

Switching broker doesn't require insurer change — you can move broker while staying with same insurer.

The new broker can also market-test if you want — but continuity with insurer is often preferable.

Retroactive date and cover terms usually preserved.

The main risks — and how to avoid them

The clean-switch checklist

  1. Notify old broker of intention to switch — usually 4-8 weeks before renewal.
  2. Confirm new broker has authority to act (Terms of Business Agreement).
  3. Provide new broker with expiring policy schedule and complete file.
  4. Approach the current insurer through the new broker — continuity encouraged.
  5. Compare quotes from new broker vs current market position.
  6. Confirm retroactive date and cover terms preserved.
  7. Update FCA/regulator notifications if required.

When to switch, and when not to

Frequently asked

Can I switch broker mid-year?
Yes, though renewal switch is cleaner. Mid-year switch is usually via a Terms of Business Agreement transfer.
Will I lose my retroactive date?
If handled properly, no. Broker switch alone doesn't affect retroactive date. Insurer switch might if not negotiated.
Does my current broker charge to release the file?
Standard practice: no fee. Some brokers charge exit fees — check Terms of Business.
How long does a switch take?
For a clean switch at renewal: 4-8 weeks. Mid-year switch: 2-4 weeks depending on complexity.
What about pending claims when I switch?
The insurer — not the broker — handles claims. Broker switch doesn't affect an existing claim.
Does the new broker need to disclose to insurer?
Broker acts on your behalf. Full disclosure via new broker satisfies fair-presentation duty.
