Baden-Baden reinsurance meeting

The Baden-Baden reinsurance meeting is the annual October gathering of European reinsurance industry participants, held in Baden-Baden, Germany. It complements Monte Carlo Rendez-Vous and provides a second milestone ahead of the 1 January renewal, particularly for continental European and central/eastern European business.

Definition

Baden-Baden is a smaller and more regionally focused gathering than Monte Carlo. Its emphasis is on continental European, central European and Mediterranean reinsurance business, with strong representation from German, French, Italian and Iberian cedants and reinsurers. The meeting is also a key forum for central and eastern European business (Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia historically) and for European motor and casualty reinsurance.

The meeting is hosted by the city of Baden-Baden and supported by a programme of formal sessions, presentations and social events. Bilateral meetings between cedants/brokers and reinsurers form the substantive activity.

Legal / Regulatory basis

No formal regulatory standing. Industry gathering analogous to Monte Carlo.

How it works in practice

Following Monte Carlo, where the high-level positioning is set, Baden-Baden is where the practical renewal preparation accelerates. Cedants and reinsurers exchange portfolio data, discuss specific terms and condition changes, and refine expectations for the 1 January placement.

Broker reports published at Baden-Baden update the Monte Carlo commentary with refinements based on the previous month’s loss experience and any market developments. For continental European catastrophe reinsurance, Baden-Baden is often more substantive than Monte Carlo because the European-specific commentary is more focused.

Example

An illustrative example: at the October 2024 Baden-Baden meeting, the focus included discussion of European secondary peril losses (hail, flood, drought) in 2024 and their implications for the 1 January 2025 European catastrophe XL renewal. Reinsurer commentary at Baden-Baden refined the directional signals set at Monte Carlo a month earlier, with greater attention to specific territory and peril questions.
