Category: Historical figures Also known as: Bronek Masojada, Bronisław Masojada Dates: Born 1961 (Johannesburg, South Africa) Principal role: Chief Executive, Hiscox plc / Hiscox Ltd 2000-2021; Deputy Chairman, Lloyd’s of London 2007-2010 Related concepts: Lloyd’s of London, Bermuda insurance market
Bronek Masojada was born in Johannesburg and educated at the University of Natal and the University of Oxford (Rhodes Scholar). He worked at McKinsey & Company before joining Hiscox in 1993 as Managing Director. He succeeded Robert Hiscox as Group Chief Executive in January 2000 and led the business through its redomiciliation to Bermuda in December 2006 (with the listed group renamed Hiscox Ltd). He retired as Chief Executive on 31 December 2021, succeeded by Aki Hussain. He served as Deputy Chairman of Lloyd’s of London from 2007 to 2010.
Masojada’s principal contribution was to build a diversified specialty insurance group that operated successfully across both the Lloyd’s market (Syndicate 33, one of the largest Lloyd’s syndicates) and the Bermuda specialty reinsurance market, with a globally significant retail SME insurance business in the UK (Hiscox UK), continental Europe, and the US. The Hiscox model — disciplined Lloyd’s underwriting in art and private client lines coupled with retail SME and reinsurance diversification — was widely studied.
He also chaired the ACORD Corporation (the global insurance data standards body), led market initiatives on contract certainty and electronic placing within Lloyd’s, and was a long-standing advocate of London market modernisation including the Future at Lloyd’s blueprint.
Hiscox Ltd remains a FTSE 250 constituent and a leading global specialty insurer. The strategic architecture of the group — Lloyd’s, London Market, retail, reinsurance and Bermuda components — set during Masojada’s tenure continues to define Hiscox under his successor. Masojada has remained active in industry initiatives in retirement, serving on insurance boards and in advisory roles.
