Biographical summary

John Charman began his underwriting career at the Charman Underwriting Agency, a Lloyd’s syndicate founded by his father. He served as Active Underwriter of Tarquin Group Syndicates in the 1980s and 1990s. In 2001 he co-founded the Ascot Group, a Lloyd’s-based specialty insurer (Syndicate 1414, managed by Ascot Underwriting Limited), backed initially by AIG. He then moved to Bermuda to found Endurance Specialty Holdings, one of the post-9/11 Bermuda Class of 2001 reinsurers, which he led from start-up to a top-25 global reinsurer with approximately $2 billion in gross premium before his departure in 2008.

In 2012 he became President and Chief Executive Officer of AXIS Capital Holdings Limited (Bermuda), a position he held until 2014.

Contribution to insurance

Charman is regarded as one of the most successful underwriting executives of the post-2001 specialty insurance era. He has been involved in the start-up of three significant specialty insurance platforms (Ascot, Endurance, and the underwriting expansion of AXIS), each of which has subsequently become a top-20 global specialty insurer. His underwriting philosophy — disciplined cycle management, careful peer selection, and an emphasis on retention of underwriting authority within the syndicate — has been widely emulated.

The post-9/11 Class of 2001 Bermuda reinsurers (which alongside Endurance included Allied World, Arch, AXIS, Montpelier and Platinum) collectively recapitalised the global reinsurance market and brought lasting structural change.

Legacy

Ascot Underwriting and Endurance both survive in materially expanded form. Ascot Group Limited is now a US/Bermuda specialty insurer owned by Canada Pension Plan Investment Board; Endurance was acquired by Sompo Holdings in 2017 and continues to operate as Sompo International. Charman has been involved in subsequent specialty start-ups and serves on multiple insurance and reinsurance boards.
