Aipedia: Counsellors and psychotherapists

AI use by counselling students on placement

Counselling students can use AI for study, but client material from placements should not go into AI tools without agency approval and client consent. Placement agencies, supervisors and training courses share responsibility, and a confidentiality breach by a trainee can affect all of them.

In short

Trainee counsellors and psychotherapists use AI to help write essays, process reports, reflective journals and placement case notes. On placement, client confidentiality and data protection apply in full, and the placement agency usually controls the records. Trainees who are BACP members are bound by the Ethical Framework 2026 from 3 November 2026, including the 2.1(e) duties on AI and 3.1 on confidentiality. Supervisors and agencies should set clear rules. Trainees need to know whether they are covered by their own PI, the agency's policy or the training provider's, as arrangements differ.

How students use AI

Counselling training involves a lot of writing: essays, case studies, process reports, reflective journals, and case notes on placement. Students under time pressure may use a generative AI chatbot to structure an essay, summarise reading, rewrite a reflective piece, or turn rough placement notes into a tidier format. Some placements also use AI tools in their own systems.

Using AI on your own learning is mainly an academic integrity question for your course. Using it on client material is a confidentiality and data protection question, and the stakes are higher.

The duties that apply

Several existing duties apply to this work:

BACP's Ethics essentials session says AI cannot do reflective practice for you. For a trainee, reflection is also what is being assessed.

The Shared AI Governance Charter adopted by CPCAB, a counselling awarding body, sets voluntary principles that many training settings may draw on.

Who is responsible on placement

A placement involves at least three parties: the student, the placement agency and the training provider, plus the placement supervisor. Agencies are usually responsible for client records and data protection compliance, and should tell students which systems and tools they may use. Supervisors should cover AI use in supervision. Training providers set rules on AI in assessed work. If those rules are unclear, the student should ask before using any AI tool with placement material.

Our guide for social work students on placement covers a similar three-way arrangement.

What can go wrong

Illustrative scenario: a second-year trainee pastes placement session notes into a free AI tool to produce a process report for their course, removing the client's first name. The report includes the client's workplace and a distinctive family event. A tutor recognises the detail, and the agency learns its client material has been entered into an external tool without consent or approval. The agency treats it as a data breach, ends the placement and refers the matter to the course. The client is informed and complains.

Student cover

BACP 4.2(a) requires members to hold appropriate PI and liability cover for their services. For trainees, how that is met varies: some placement agencies insure students under their own policy, some require students to hold their own cover, and some training providers have arrangements. Students should confirm in writing which applies, whether it covers data and confidentiality claims, and whether it continues if the student also sees private clients. Our guide on whether counsellors need PI and the cost guide explain the basics.

Frequently asked

Can counselling students use AI for essays?

That depends on your training provider's rules on academic integrity, which you should follow. Using AI on your own learning is different from using it on client material. Never enter placement client information into an AI tool without agency approval and client consent.

Does the BACP Framework apply to trainees?

Trainees who are BACP members must work in accordance with the Ethical Framework, which becomes the 2026 version from midday on 3 November 2026. That includes the AI duties in 2.1(e) and the confidentiality duties in 3.1.

Who decides which AI tools I can use on placement?

Usually the placement agency, because it is normally responsible for client records and data protection. Your training provider sets rules for assessed work, and your supervisor should discuss AI use with you. If the rules are unclear, ask before using any tool with placement material.

Am I insured as a student on placement?

It depends. Some placement agencies cover students under their own policy, some require students to hold their own PI, and some training providers make arrangements. Confirm in writing which applies and whether it covers confidentiality and data claims.
