Aipedia: Ecologists and environmental consultants
Usually yes: PI for ecologists commonly responds to claims caused by AI-assisted errors in the same way as other professional errors, subject to the policy terms. The detail is in exclusions, activities descriptions and what you told insurers.

In short
CIEEM expects members and Registered Practices to hold appropriate PI and public liability insurance but sets no minimum, and there is no statutory requirement. Most ecology PI is written on a civil liability basis, so a claim alleging negligent survey or report work is commonly covered whether or not AI was involved, subject to the wording. Watch for pollution or environmental exclusions, any AI-specific clauses, contractual liabilities, fines and penalties and claims outside your declared activities. Answer proposal form questions about AI accurately. No insurer or body statement on AI and PI for ecologists had been published as at October 2026.
There is no statutory PI requirement for ecologists or environmental consultants. The CIEEM Code supplementary notes say members should have "appropriate levels of professional indemnity and public liability insurance", or ensure their employer does. The Code of Practice for Registered Practices sets the same expectation for firms. Neither sets a minimum limit, and CIEEM’s March 2026 Membership Regulations contain no PI requirement.
In practice, minimum limits usually come from clients, frameworks and appointments. Apex’s guide to PI costs for environmental consultants covers the factors insurers look at.
Most PI policies for consultants cover legal liability for claims arising from the conduct of professional business. The question is usually whether you breached your duty of care, not which tool was involved. A misidentified species from auto-ID, a hallucinated record in a desk study or a wrong condition score in a net gain metric would commonly be treated as ordinary professional errors, subject to the wording. Apex’s guide, does PI cover AI mistakes, explains the position across professions.
PI is usually written on a claims-made basis, so the policy in force when a claim is first made or circumstances are notified responds, not the one in force when the AI tool was used. That matters for survey and assessment work, where an error may only surface years later when a scheme reaches site or a gain plan is reviewed. Keep cover in place, including run-off if you stop trading.
The gaps for ecologists using AI usually sit in a handful of places:
Commercial insurance law expects a business to make a fair presentation of the risk to insurers. Some proposal forms may ask about AI use. Answer accurately, describing which tools you use, for what tasks and how outputs are checked. A clear description of your controls can help underwriters. See why the proposal form matters for PI.
Illustrative. A small consultancy uses AI to populate a biodiversity metric and the client later claims the cost of extra off-site units. The consultancy’s policy covers civil liability for its declared ecological consultancy activities and has no AI exclusion. The insurer handles the claim as a negligence claim, focusing on whether the baseline errors fell below a competent ecologist’s standard. The consultancy’s record of who checked the metric becomes central evidence. See AI and net gain calculations.
To keep AI-assisted work insurable, most firms should take these steps:
Apex arranges PI for ecologists and environmental consultants. A broker reviews your wording and how your policy treats AI-assisted survey, assessment and reporting work. See the AI in ecology consultancy overview and AI, sensitive species data and confidentiality.
No statute requires it. CIEEM expects members and Registered Practices to hold appropriate professional indemnity and public liability insurance but sets no minimum. Clients and frameworks often require specific limits in appointments.
You must make a fair presentation of the risk, and some proposal forms ask directly about AI. Describe your tools, the tasks they support and how outputs are checked. Inaccurate answers can create problems at claim stage.
It can, particularly for contaminated land or other environmental advice. Some policies may carve back claims arising from negligent professional advice. Check the wording against the work you actually do.
Your client will usually claim against you, because you gave the advice. You may have a claim against the supplier under its licence terms, but those often limit liability heavily. Clause 10 of the CIEEM Code makes you responsible for your professional decisions.
As at October 2026, no professional body or insurer had published a statement on AI and PI for ecologists. Policies are being reviewed generally for AI wording, so read new or changed clauses at renewal.
