Combined Contractors’ Insurance

Most working contractors need several covers at once — the works, the plant and their liabilities. A combined contractors’ policy brings them together under one annual contract, one renewal date and one point of contact, instead of three separate policies that never quite line up.

In short

A combined contractors’ policy packages contractors’ all risks, plant & equipment and public, products and employers’ liability into a single annual policy — simpler to manage than separate covers, and with no gaps where one policy stops and another should start.

What a combined contractors’ policy includes

Typically: contractors’ all risks for the contract works; plant and equipment, owned and hired-in; public and products liability; employers’ liability; small tools; and optional extras such as contract works in transit and continuing hire charges. One schedule, one renewal.

Why contractors combine cover

Three reasons: it is simpler to manage one policy than three; it is usually priced more keenly as a package; and it closes the gaps and overlaps that appear when separate policies from different insurers are stitched together. When a claim spans the works, the plant and a liability, one insurer handling all of it is a real advantage.

Annual combined or single project

A combined policy is written on an annual basis for contractors doing regular work. For a one-off or a very large single contract, a single-project contract works policy is often the better fit — we will tell you which suits your workload.

Who it suits

SME and mid-market building firms, groundworkers, general and multi-trade contractors, and subcontractors who own plant and carry staff. If you have staff, employers’ liability is a legal requirement — a combined policy makes sure it is in place alongside everything else.

What to check

That the employers’ liability limit meets the statutory floor and any contract requirement; that the public-liability limit matches what your contracts demand; that the contract-works turnover is declared accurately; and that hired-in plant and continuing hire charges are included if you hire kit. If you also design or advise, you may need professional indemnity on top.

Frequently asked

What does combined contractors’ insurance include?

Usually contract works (all risks), plant and equipment, public and products liability and employers’ liability under one annual policy, with optional extras such as tools and hired-in plant.

Do I still need professional indemnity as well?

If you carry out design, specification or advisory work, yes — a combined contractors’ policy covers the physical works and liabilities, not your professional advice. Design-and-build firms typically carry both.

Is employers’ liability included?

It can and, if you employ anyone, it must be in place by law at a minimum of £5m. A combined policy is a tidy way to make sure it sits alongside your other cover.

Annual or single project?

A combined policy is annual, for contractors working continuously. For a single one-off or very large contract, single-project cover is often the better and cheaper route.
