Professional indemnity insurance

UK PI insurance cost benchmark: indicative premiums by profession

What professional indemnity insurance typically costs UK firms, drawn from around 980 placements Apex has arranged. We show the professions where our data is deepest, with the placement count on every row.

In short

For the two professions where Apex has the deepest placement data, indicative professional indemnity premiums at a £1m limit run from roughly £440 for the smallest architects up to £7,210 for larger practices, and from about £310 to £2,740 for accountants. Premiums rise with fee income and with the limit of indemnity. These are indicative ranges from Apex’s own placements, not quotes.

How to read these figures

These ranges are built from around 980 professional indemnity placements Apex Insurance Brokers has arranged for UK firms, refreshed on 2026-09-29. We only publish a profession where we hold enough placements to be meaningful (at least 100), and within each profession we only show a fee band backed by at least 30 placements — every row lists its own count so you can weigh it. Premium is driven mainly by fee income, the limit of indemnity, claims history and the exact work a firm does, so an individual quote can sit outside these ranges. The figures are indicative and are not a quotation.

How premiums scale with the limit of indemnity

The figures above are for a £1m limit. As a rough guide, premiums scale with the limit of indemnity by these factors (a £250k limit costs about 0.75× the £1m premium, a £5m limit about 1.45×):

Limit of indemnityApprox. factor vs £1m
£250,000×0.75
£500,000×0.85
£1,000,000×1.0
£2,000,000×1.2
£5,000,000×1.45

A minimum premium of about £300 applies to the smallest firms.

What moves a PI premium up or down

Two firms of the same size and profession can pay very different premiums. The main drivers are claims history (a recent claim or circumstance typically increases the premium), the breadth of work (higher-risk disciplines cost more), the limit of indemnity and any excess, the fee income used to rate the policy, and the strength of the presentation to insurers. A broker who knows the market for your profession is usually the difference between the lower and upper end of these ranges.
