Shop insurance in London

Reviewed by Apex Insurance Brokers · Published 16 July 2026

London retail runs from West End flagships to neighbourhood parades, and shop insurance has to flex across all of it. A West End store carries high-value stock, plate-glass frontage and heavy footfall; a Shoreditch independent or a suburban parade shop carries a different mix. What a London shop needs is cover shaped to its stock, its frontage and the street it trades on — not a one-size policy.

Where the risks come from for London shops

High-value stock in flagship and specialist stores draws theft and robbery, and drives the security conditions insurers attach. Plate-glass frontages on busy streets are a standing damage and replacement exposure. Heavy footfall brings public-liability slips and trips inside the shop, and dense city-centre premises share fire and escape-of-water risk with their neighbours. Cash takings add money exposure. The mix decides the cover.

A London example

A West End store is ram-raided overnight, high-value stock is taken and the shopfront is wrecked. Shop insurance responds across stock, glass and the trading lost while the frontage is boarded and repaired — the combined claim a single "contents" policy would leave half-covered.

What shop insurance covers

A shop policy bundles the covers a retailer actually needs: stock and contents against fire, theft and accidental damage; business interruption for the income lost while you cannot trade; public and products liability for customer injury; employers' liability once you have staff (that one is required by law); and usually money and glass. Buildings cover comes in if you own the premises or your lease makes you responsible.

Placing it in London with Apex

Apex is an FCA-authorised commercial broker (FRN 724952), established in 2009, with access to more than 30 markets including Lloyd's through wholesale. For a London retailer that means a named broker who can rate high-value stock and plate-glass exposure properly, rather than a packaged scheme priced for an average shop.
