Aipedia: Debt advice firms
A debt advice firm's PI may cover a negligence claim caused by an AI error, but only if the wording allows. No FCA PI requirement for debt advice firms was found, and regulator-led redress and fines are commonly outside cover.

In short
No FCA requirement for debt advice firms to hold PI was found in CONC 8, and the FCA has said nothing on AI and PI for the sector. Where firms buy PI it is voluntary, so its treatment of AI is purely contractual. A civil claim alleging negligent advice usually falls within a PI wording whether or not a tool was involved, subject to the terms, excess and any technology or AI exclusions. FCA fines are commonly excluded, and costs of regulator-required redress exercises often are too. Documenting how AI is used and controlled helps at renewal and when a claim arrives.
No FCA PI requirement for debt advice firms was found in CONC 8. CONC 10, which covers prudential requirements, exists in the Handbook but its content was not checked for this guide, so firms should confirm their own prudential position separately. There is also no FCA statement on AI and PI for debt advice.
In practice this means any PI a debt firm holds is bought voluntarily. Unlike professions with regulator-set minimum terms, nothing outside the contract dictates what the policy must cover. The scope, limit, excess and any AI or technology exclusions are entirely a matter of the wording you agree.
Wordings vary widely, but the questions to ask tend to be the same:
See AI exclusions and clauses in insurance policies and does PI cover AI mistakes.
Debt firms face two different kinds of financial exposure when advice goes wrong:
The FCA's approach to AI relies on the Consumer Duty and SM&CR, and its October 2026 good-practice page says firms remain responsible for outcomes, including from outsourced AI. A systemic AI error is therefore more likely to lead to regulator-led redress than isolated claims. See the fines and penalties exclusion.
Illustrative: a firm's solution ranking tool is found to have steered some customers to unsuitable plans. A handful of customers sue. Separately, the firm agrees to review all cases from the period and pay redress. The individual claims may be covered subject to the excess and aggregation terms, while the review and redress programme may fall partly or wholly outside the policy, depending on the wording.
The same incident can therefore produce covered and uncovered costs at once. Knowing in advance which bucket each falls into helps the firm plan its reserves and its conversation with the insurer.
See AI use and your PI: what to document. Specific risks are covered in AI recommending IVAs, DROs and DMPs and AI in complaints handling.

No FCA PI requirement for debt advice firms was found in CONC 8. Some firms choose to buy it voluntarily. Because there are no regulator-set minimum terms, what is covered depends entirely on the wording you agree with the insurer.
Often a civil liability wording responds to a negligence claim regardless of whether a tool was involved, subject to its terms, excess and exclusions. Some wordings exclude or limit technology and AI losses, so check the definitions and tell your insurer how you use AI.
Commonly not in full. Fines are usually excluded, and the cost of a regulator-required review and redress is often outside cover or limited, depending on the wording. Individual civil claims and Ombudsman awards are treated differently.
You should disclose material facts when buying or renewing cover, and automating advice is likely to be material. Describe which tasks use AI and how outputs are reviewed. Failing to disclose can affect cover.
