PI insurance renewal timeline — when each UK profession renews
Reviewed by Matthew Bartlett, Director, Apex Insurance Brokers Limited · Published 14 July 2026
Some UK professions renew PI on a set date; others spread across the year. This page maps the annual renewal calendar across the main professional sectors — useful for firms planning ahead and for understanding sector-wide market dynamics.
The set-date professions
- Solicitors (SRA). 1 October. Every SRA-regulated firm renews on the same date. Creates concentrated market activity July-September.
- Solicitors (Scotland — LSS Master Policy). Different date under the Lockton-placed scheme.
- Barristers. Bar Mutual renewal cycle typically anniversary of chambers membership.
The individual-anniversary professions
- Architects (ARB). Renewal on individual firm anniversary. Common clusters around November-January and April-June.
- Accountants (ICAEW, ACCA). Individual firm anniversary. Common clusters at January (year-end aligned) and April/July.
- Surveyors (RICS). Individual firm anniversary. Common clusters at April, October, and December-January.
- Engineers. Individual firm anniversary. Distributed across the year.
- IFAs (FCA-authorised). Individual firm anniversary aligned with FCA authorisation date. Common clusters April, October, January.
- Mortgage advisers. Similar to IFAs.
- Insurance brokers. Individual firm anniversary.
- IT consultants, management consultants, other non-regulated. Individual anniversary or client-contract driven.
Planning implications
- Solicitors 1 October creates concentrated market activity. Firms unprepared face limited options.
- Individual-anniversary sectors have less concentrated market activity but each firm faces its own renewal deadline.
- Market cycles affect individual-anniversary sectors differently — firms renewing at peak-market conditions face different situation from off-peak.
- Cross-professional insurers can smooth their book across the calendar via individual-anniversary sectors.
Sector-specific market moments
- July-August: SRA firms preparing for October renewal.
- October-November: SRA cycle completing; ARB architects starting.
- December-January: ICAEW accountants; some ARB architects.
- April-May: RICS surveyors renewals cluster.
- Continuous: FCA-authorised firms across the year.
For firms planning ahead
- 12 weeks before renewal — start preparation.
- 8 weeks before — presentation build.
- 6 weeks before — market run.
- 3 weeks before — bind decision.
- Renewal day — new policy incepts.
Applies regardless of the specific renewal date. Concentrated cycles (SRA October) may require earlier start due to insurer capacity.
Frequently asked
Do all UK professions renew PI on the same date?
No. Solicitors under SRA renew on 1 October as a sector-wide set date. Most other professions renew on individual firm anniversary.
Why do SRA solicitors renew on 1 October?
SRA rules set 1 October as the qualifying-insurer PII renewal date for all SRA-regulated firms in England & Wales. Creates a market set-piece.
When do architects typically renew?
ARB doesn't set a sector-wide date. Individual practice anniversary. Common clusters at November-January and April-June driven by historic authorisation patterns.
What about ICAEW accountants?
ICAEW doesn't set a sector-wide date. Firm anniversary. Common clusters at January (year-end alignment) and July.
Do FCA-authorised firms have a set renewal date?
No. FCA authorisation anniversary drives individual firm renewal. Distributed across the year, though common clusters exist at April, October, January.
Can I move my renewal date to a preferred month?
Yes typically, via a short or long policy period at the next renewal. Discuss with broker. Rare in practice unless there's a specific commercial reason.
Why does the LSS Master Policy have a different date from SRA?
Scottish solicitors use the LSS Master Policy placed through Lockton, with its own cycle distinct from the SRA October date. Different regulatory framework.
What if my firm operates in multiple professional bodies?
Each body's regulatory framework applies to the relevant work. Solicitors doing accountancy work face both SRA and (potentially) ICAEW rules. PI cover typically arranged around the highest-friction cycle.
