Route comparison · Broker vs online

When a specialist broker beats an online quote — UK PI 2026

Reviewed by Apex Insurance Brokers · Published 15 July 2026

Online insurance-quote engines have made buying PI faster for simple profiles. But there's a class of situation where the online route breaks down and a specialist broker earns its place. This page sets out where and why.

Where online quote engines work

Simple advisory profiles — clean claims history, standard practice mix, modest turnover, no material sector-specific issues. Small consultancy, freelance advisory, standard-profile IFA. Online engines process the standard-profile firm efficiently.

Where they break down

  1. Prior claims or notifications. Online engines typically decline or refer. Specialist broker with wholesale market access places.
  2. Complex client-contract requirements. Bespoke wording extensions, retroactive date requirements, aggregation carve-outs, layered programmes — standard online engines don't handle these.
  3. Difficult practice mix. Cross-jurisdiction work, unusual profession combinations, specialist activity outside standard rating models.
  4. BSA-touching residential exposure. Section 135's 30-year tail requires specialist wording and pricing that online engines don't deliver.
  5. R&D tax credit specialists. Post-2022 HMRC scrutiny means many online insurers exclude or restrict; specialist market covers.
  6. Consumer Duty firms. Fair-value assessment complexity + vulnerable-customer treatment requires broker-level advice.
  7. Cyber-PI boundary questions. Where cyber and PI wordings interact, specialist broker structures the whole programme.
  8. Regulator-notification handling. When a notification lands, specialist broker coordinates defence-panel engagement.

The comparison in one paragraph

Online quote engines are cost-efficient for the standard 60% of profiles where the risk fits an underwriting model. Specialist brokers earn their place on the 40% of profiles where the risk doesn't fit, or where the client wants independent whole-market advice at renewal.

For firms in that 40% — specialist brokers routinely produce placement outcomes materially better than online routes at similar or lower total cost when full-year cost including claims handling is measured.

Frequently asked

Can I get a PI quote online?
Yes for many standard profiles. Comparison sites and direct insurer engines handle simple placements. Complex profiles require broker involvement.
What's wrong with online insurance for PI?
Nothing for simple profiles. For difficult risk, complex contracts, or firms wanting independent advice, online routes deliver worse outcomes than specialist broker.
How much does a specialist broker cost?
Standard: commission-based, 15-25% of gross premium. Cost is priced into premium regardless of route. Specialist brokers often save the firm more than the commission through better rating and wording.
