A group dental plan is an employer-sponsored insurance covering routine and major dental treatment for employees. Routine cover (examinations, scale-and-polish, x-rays, fillings) is normally reimbursed at 100% up to an annual limit. Major treatment (crowns, bridges, orthodontics) is normally reimbursed at 50–75% subject to a higher per-event or annual limit.

Category: Health benefits Also known as: Group dental insurance, corporate dental plan Typical limits: £150–£500 routine; £750–£1,500 major Related concepts: Healthcare cash plan, Optical plan group, Group PMI

Definition

The plan provides “scheme of treatment” reimbursement either via a defined fee schedule or as a percentage of actual cost. Cover is typically available on a no-medical-underwriting basis with a short waiting period before major treatment can be claimed.

Legal / Regulatory basis

Regulated under the FCA Handbook ICOBS. Tax treatment: P11D benefit in kind on employees; employer’s premium is deductible for corporation tax; Class 1A NIC payable by employer; IPT at the standard rate on the premium.

Scope of cover

Most plans operate on a “preventive plus” basis covering 100% of routine treatment up to the annual limit, with optional buy-up modules covering major treatment, accidental dental injury, orthodontics and partner/family cover. Some plans operate through a network of dentists offering discounted fees; others allow access to any dentist.

Practical example

An employer provides a group dental plan with £300 routine limit and £1,000 major limit. An employee has two check-ups (£90 total), one scale-and-polish (£50) and a filling (£120) — total £260, fully reimbursed within the routine limit. A crown (£800) is partly reimbursed under the major treatment 75% category up to £750.
