Taunton has a substantial and historic independent boarding cluster, one of the largest sixth-form colleges in the country, and a maintained estate that is growing through Garden Town expansion at Staplegrove, Comeytrowe and Monkton Heathfield. The independents are large and well-established, with significant overseas pupil cohorts that drive distinctive cover considerations. Apex Insurance Brokers works from Bristol, around 60–75 minutes from Taunton via the M5.
The boarding independents define Taunton. Taunton School (founded 1847) runs senior, prep, pre-prep and international centre across a substantial Staplegrove Road estate, with significant overseas boarding capacity. King’s College Taunton sits on a campus near the South Road with a senior school, prep school (King’s Hall at Pyrland) and sports facilities including the King’s Hall Sport Centre. Queen’s College Taunton is a coeducational Methodist day and boarding school running pre-prep through to sixth form. Wellington School at Wellington (just to the south-west) completes the wider independent cluster. Between them these schools own substantial heritage estate, significant sports facilities, overseas pupil populations and international summer-school programmes that fundamentally shape their insurance profile.
Richard Huish College is a sixth-form college and one of the largest in the country — over 3,000 students across the South Road campus — with consistently strong league-table performance. Its pure 16–19 focus distinguishes its risk profile from FE colleges (no T-Levels in the same volume, no apprentices, narrower age range) and that affects the way cover is structured.
Somerset College (now part of Bridgwater & Taunton College) provides FE, T-Level and apprenticeship coverage via the Wellington Road site. Its central insurance is typically tendered as a single placement; its supply chain — training providers, employer-partner facility users, contracted catering — is the SME tier we typically serve.
In the maintained sector, Bishop Fox’s School, Heathfield Community School, The Castle School and Taunton Academy form the principal secondary provision. Court Fields School at Wellington sits in the wider catchment. Primary numbers have grown sharply through Garden Town expansion at Staplegrove and Monkton Heathfield, with new academy and community schools either opened or in delivery.
Private nursery and out-of-school provision concentrates in North Town, Galmington, Bishop’s Hull and Trull, with workplace nursery provision near the Blackbrook Business Park and Firepool.
The boarding cluster shapes the conversation:

Taunton is around 60–75 minutes from our Bristol office via the M5. We don’t have a Taunton office and we won’t pretend otherwise. What we offer is a broker that knows the listed-building constraints of Taunton’s boarding estate, the international pupil considerations that come with significant overseas cohorts, and the underwriters who price Taunton’s independent cluster properly.
We work with bursars, finance directors, COOs, school councils and trust boards. For boarding schools we expect to do regular site visits, full pre-renewal review, and clear written analysis of retroactive cover, sub-limits and abuse-liability arrangements.
