Definition

Hippo’s product proposition centres on the integration of smart-home connected sensors (typically water leak, smoke, freeze and motion detectors) into the homeowners’ insurance policy, intended to provide early-warning detection and reduce claim frequency. Hippo provides the sensors at no extra cost to qualifying policyholders, integrates the data into its customer service workflow, and uses the data alongside traditional underwriting variables for pricing.

Legal / Regulatory basis

Hippo writes business through subsidiary licensed insurers including Spinnaker Insurance Company and partnership arrangements with admitted carriers. As a US-licensed insurance group, Hippo is regulated principally on a state-by-state basis (see US state-based insurance regulation). The company is incorporated in Delaware and headquartered in Palo Alto, California. Hippo does not operate in the United Kingdom.

How it works in practice

A Hippo homeowners’ policy is sold direct-to-consumer through the company website or through partner channels (including builder partnerships and mortgage referrals). Policy issue involves declared variables supplemented by third-party property data (Lidar, public records, satellite imagery). Qualifying policyholders receive a smart-home kit (water sensor, smoke detector, freeze sensor) shipped at policy inception. Sensor data is monitored centrally; significant alerts trigger customer outreach. Renewal pricing incorporates the sensor adoption and behaviour.

Common variations

Hippo has variously offered direct-to-consumer policies, partner-channel distribution, and (through Spinnaker) commercial property and excess and surplus lines business. The smart-home sensor component has been refined over multiple iterations.

Example

A Texas homeowners’ policy issued via Hippo with a sensor kit including a water leak detector under the kitchen sink: the detector identifies a slow leak and notifies the homeowner via Hippo app; early intervention prevents what might otherwise have been a $30,000 water damage claim.
