Aipedia: AI in the UK professions

Aipedia is Apex's guide to how AI is used in 57 UK professions, what each regulator says about it, and how professional indemnity insurance usually responds. Professionals remain responsible for AI-assisted work, so the rules and the cover matter.

In short

Aipedia covers 57 UK professions, from solicitors, accountants and architects to financial advisers, recruiters and doctors. For each one it sets out the regulator's position on AI, the existing duties that apply when AI is used, the practical risks in 15 common tasks, and how PI or clinical indemnity usually responds. Most regulators apply existing rules rather than new AI rules, some bodies such as RICS now have binding AI standards, and courts have warned about fabricated AI citations. A broker can review how your policy treats AI-assisted work.

What Aipedia covers

Aipedia is Apex's reference guide to how AI is used in 57 UK professions. For each profession it explains what the regulator and professional bodies have said about AI, which existing duties apply when AI is used, what can go wrong in practice, and how professional indemnity (PI) or clinical indemnity cover usually responds. Each profession has an overview page and 15 guides on specific tasks, from AI legal research and AI-drafted accounts to automated valuations, AI structural calculations and ambient clinical scribes.

The guides are written for firm owners, partners, compliance leads and practitioners. They are general information, not legal or insurance advice, and they are reviewed against primary sources such as regulators' own publications, legislation and court judgments.

What it means for PI

Most PI policies cover claims arising from the professional services you provide, and many wordings do not mention AI at all. Whether an AI-related error is covered usually depends on whether the work falls within your described professional activities, any exclusions in the wording, and whether you have given the insurer a fair presentation of how you work. Several regulators set minimum PI terms that limit the exclusions insurers can apply; others set none. Each Aipedia profession page explains the position for that profession.

Apex arranges PI for professional firms. A broker can review how your current policy treats AI-assisted work, help you describe your AI use to insurers, or arrange new cover. Firms that build or sell AI products can also look at AI insurance.

Frequently asked

What is Aipedia?

Aipedia is a free reference guide from Apex Insurance Brokers explaining how AI is used across 57 UK professions, what regulators and professional bodies have said, which duties apply and how professional indemnity insurance usually responds to AI-related claims.

Do professional regulators have specific AI rules?

Most do not. Regulators such as the FCA and SRA apply existing duties on competence, supervision and confidentiality to AI use. Some bodies have gone further, for example RICS, whose AI standard became mandatory on 9 March 2026.

Does PI insurance cover mistakes made with AI?

Often it can, because PI usually covers claims arising from your professional services however the work was produced. It depends on the wording, any exclusions and whether you described your activities fairly to the insurer, so check your policy.

Who is responsible if an AI tool makes an error in professional work?

In most professions the professional or firm remains responsible for work delivered to a client, even when an AI tool produced part of it. Regulators and courts have stressed that output must be checked before it is relied on.
